Southern Journey (Revisited)Feature documentary. 75 mins

Released in UK cinemas mid-pandemic, Southern Journey (Revisited) premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest, was one of the Guardian picks of lockdown culture, and is currently available to watch on Now TV.Exploring the truths behind the stereotypes of the Southern USA, SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED) is both a music documentary and a road movie. Set against the incendiary backdrop of the 2018 mid-term elections, and accompanied by a glorious soundtrack of blues and bluegrass, hollers and spirituals, the film retraces the route of an iconic song collecting trip from the late 1950s – Alan Lomax’s so-called “Southern Journey”.
Lomax was accompanied on the trip by the not-yet-famous English folk singer Shirley Collins, and the music they collected is an unparalleled single collection of traditional roots music, inspiring a host of folk musicians as well as providing the inspiration for the soundtrack to the Coen Brother’s ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’.
The film travels the back roads of the rural South, and while the focus is on the transcendental roots music of the region, it also contradicts the many reductive stereotypes about the region and offers insight into the historical injustices that underpin the Black Lives Matter movement.

Southern Journey (Revisited) was produced in partnership with the Association for Cultural Equity, LUSH and the Virginia Film Office.

The Ballad of Shirley Collins

Feature documentary. 93 mins

Rob Curry and Tim Plester's follow-up to the award-winning documentary ‘Way of the Morris’ is a creative response to the life of musical icon Shirley Collins. It is a universal story of a singer who lost their voice, and traces her attempts to regain it at the grand old age of 80 after not singing for nigh on 40 years. The film intertwines this with the story of her formative years, with particular emphasis on a now-legendary trip she made around the 'Deep South' of America with her then-lover, the pre-eminent ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. Our third feature documentary, The Ballad of Shirley Collins was a co-production with Burning Bridges, Fire Films and Miles of Smiles. It premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2017, and was selected for festivals including IFFR and CPH:DOX. The film was released theatrically in the UK in 2018 and in the US in 2019.
